Cleanse, tone and moisturise

Before applying make-up, it is advised to cleanse, tone and moisturise the face - this allows the make-up to glide on much easier, and give a smoother finish. It is also essential, if the model/client is already wearing make-up prior to application.

First of all, you should lay down some couch roll on the work station to keep it clean and hygienic. To prepare the model, you should put a towel/wrap around the models shoulders and clip their hair back out of their face, checking that they are comfortable. It is then vital to wash your hands (and make sure that the client is aware of this).

Cleansing:

  • Put some cleanser on a few individual cotton pads (for males, use tissue)
  • Take one pad in each hand, and use upward strokes to remove any make-up/dirt, starting from the chin and moving up the face towards the hair line
  • Ensure that the client keeps their eyes closed and gently rub over the eyes to remove any eye make-up
  • Place a small amount of cleanser on the back of your hand and ask your client to look upwards. Use baby buds to remove any make-up from more delicate areas e.g. directly under the eyes
  • If the make-up is stubborn, ask your client/model to do it themselves
  • Throw away any dirty cotton wool pads/buds
Toning:

  • Repeat the same steps as above with toner
Moisturising:

  • Squirt a pea size amount of moisturiser on your hand and rub between your fingers
  • Massage this into your clients face using upward strokes
  • This should be fairly gentle, relaxing and enjoyable for the client
Before and after cleansing, toning and moisturising
For a first attempt, I think it was fairly successful. As you can see, the majority of the make-up was removed (including even waterproof make-up) and the client said it was an enjoyable experience.

However, as you look extremely closely, and use a baby bud to double check, you can see there is still a very small amount of makeup under the eyes/in the waterline  This proves that I need to be more thorough or possibly slightly harsher in order to ensure all of the make-up is removed successfully.

You are able to see a small amount of make-up along the waterline

Orientation exercises - finding our way

A fairly big part of starting university is the fact that if you move away from home, you have to find your way around your new area, and know where key places are. Originally, I am from Oxford, so moving down to Southampton meant that this was vital for me to do.

Being an aspiring make-up artist, it is important to know where some specific brands of make-up are, as I'm sure they will come in handy at some point! Therefore, our task was to find these places (which, as you can see, we did) and take a selfie... Once there, we also had to find out if the company had a particular best seller.

Smashbox's best seller was their Photo finish primer

Benefit Cosmetics and Mac did not have a specific product which was their best seller

Laura Mercier's top seller was their lip glacĂ©

And these were Bobbi Brown's top 10 seller's!

Orientation Exercises - paper bag masks

One task we had to do was create a mask of who we wanted to be in 5-10 years time. However, we only had 20 minutes, a paper bag and a limited amount of materials to do so...

When creating my mask, I went for more of a metaphorical approach, whereby it had a concept, rather than creating the physical appearance of who I wanted to be.

My mask represents the idea, that the sky is the limit (hence why my head is literally in the clouds), but it also shows that throughout my career path I want to be able to travel all over the world and take part in many different adventures.

The Initial Starting Point For Me

My name is Tasmin Edwards, and I am currently at the start of embarking on a new journey through make-up artistry and hair design. Prior to starting this university course, I have just completed my A-levels. The crossover path for me was fine art - this was my most passionate subject at A-level, but whilst completing the 2 years, I realised that it was the preparation for the pieces that I enjoyed more than actually drawing/painting the piece. The preparation process involved getting a model ready (through the use of make-up and hair) and this is the thing that I wanted to concentrate on. This course will allow me to specialise and expand my techniques in make-up and hair, and hopefully allow me to be enthusiastic about all areas.

At this point in time, I am unsure of exactly what I want to do after the course, but I am leaning towards the fashion side of things (e.g. working on a fashion shoot/fashion show). However, I am approaching this course very open-mindedly, and I am looking to explore all areas of make-up and hair design, before I make an informed decision of the specific direction I want to head into.
